Restoring Venable Hall: Blending History with Modern Craftsmanship
Restoring Venable Hall: Blending History with Modern Craftsmanship
At Hampden-Sydney College, founded in 1775, history comes alive through thoughtful preservation. Venable Hall, a cornerstone of the campus, recently underwent a restoration that blends historic charm with modern craftsmanship.
Restoring the Past: Reclaimed Heart Pine Flooring
To honor the building’s legacy, we replaced over 1,900 square feet of damaged flooring with salvaged Heart Pine. After carefully repairing and sanding the existing wood, we applied various floor finishes to preserve its historical character while ensuring durability for years to come.

For the 10,000-square-foot addition to Venable Hall, we installed new white oak flooring. This included a carefully crafted process of laying Select Grade Rift & Quartered White Oak on sleepers, followed by sanding and the application of oil stain, sealer, and finish. The result is a floor that complements both the historic and modern elements of the space.
A Lasting Legacy
The restoration of Venable Hall is an example of how history and modern craftsmanship can work together. If you’re looking to restore or enhance the floors in your historic space, we’re here to help.
